A Caged Bird's Cry

A Caged Bird’s Cry

Author: Molly Day

With mystery, romance, revenge, and bonds that transcend death, A Caged Bird’s Cry by Molly Day is an emotional journey that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Cassie Byrd’s best friend supposedly committed suicide fifteen years ago but she knows that it was murder. No one else believes her and she has run into nothing but dead ends. Even so, she refuses to give up until she finds the truth.

She thinks that she sees a ghost when a stranger who looks exactly like Jay would have all grown up saves her from falling down a flight of stairs. Conglomerate heir Emerson King may look like Jay but his life couldn’t be more different. The only other thing that they have in common is a soft spot for Cassie.

Emerson has his own agenda. He is determined to destroy his father’s company at any cost. No one, not even those who are closest to him, knows exactly what he is up to or why.

Cassie thinks that she and Emerson are worlds apart but their fates may be more entwined than she ever could have dreamed. He might just be the key to finding the dangerous answers that she has been seeking.

Will she find the murderer and bring them to justice? Or has she opened a can of worms that should have been left alone?

Excerpt:

“Why though? Why would you bother saving me? You don’t even know me. You didn’t need to do that.”

He went quiet for nearly a full minute before responding. “You looked like you had seen a ghost when you saw me. I figured I was the reason you fell. I didn’t want that on my conscience.”

Guilt twisted Cassie’s insides. Right. She had felt that way so it made sense that she hadn’t been able to hide her expression. She could only imagine what he must have thought seeing a total stranger stare at him in shock like that.

“…I’m so sorry. You look exactly like my best friend.”

“Is that who’s on your home screen?” Emerson asked, nearly giving her a heart attack.

She had completely forgotten that he would have seen her phone background when he called someone to come get him. It was a picture of her and Jay taken only a couple of months before he was killed.

Darlene had taken all of the kids in their group home out to get free slushies from this convenience store chain on Free Slushie Day. Jay had gotten blue raspberry—his favorite—and got blue dye all over his face like he always did. Both of them had stuck their slushie-dyed tongues out for the picture as they held up their drinks with one hand and had the other arm around each other’s backs, squeezing their eyes shut for dramatic effect.

“Yeah,” Cassie said thickly. “That’s Jay. I didn’t mean to freak you out. It’s just…he was murdered fifteen years ago so you were right about me basically seeing a ghost.”

“Murdered?!” Emerson coughed before groaning again.

She was willing to bet that he had broken a rib in addition to his arm. Laughing and coughing both hurt him. That only made her feel guiltier. She had overshared to a stranger and shocked him when he was already hurt because of her. Anyone would react like that upon hearing that they looked like a murder victim.
